This is her invocation: "Gāyatrī! You are one-footed, two-footed, three-footed, four-footed — and footless, for you are not to be reached. Homage to your fourth, visible foot above the dust! May such-and-such not attain that [wish of his]" — or: "may that desire of such-and-such not be fulfilled" — and the desire of the one against whom this invocation is made will not be fulfilled; — or: "may I obtain such-and-such."

The prayerful invocation of the gāyatrī, with an ascent that contains the whole vidyā: one-footed… four-footed — and apad asi, "footless": above all feet, "for you are not to be reached" (na hi padyase — a play: pad is both "foot" and "to attain"). The prayer outgrows its own metre: it has that on which one stands, and that on which no one may set foot.
And a practical power: by invoking the gāyatrī one turns aside another's enmity and asks for one's own good. The Upaniṣad is not ashamed of applied prayer: she who contains the universe can deal with an offender too; but note the order — first homage to the Footless One, then the petition: power is given out of worship, not instead of it.
