The second round of oblations widens the addressees to the universe: the gods (Agni, Soma), the three vyāhṛtis singly and together, the two estates of spirit and power, time itself — "to the past and to the future"! — the whole, the All-gods, Prajāpati. The cup gathers the remainders of every storey of being: nothing is left without its share.
The oblation to time is striking: both past and future are acceptable addresses for a gift; the draught of greatness is mixed on a reconciliation with time in both directions. So Vedic prosperity is built: not to snatch one's own from the world but to feast the whole world and drink the common remainder.
