अस्तमिते आदित्ये याज्ञवल्क्य चन्द्रमस्य् अस्तमिते किंज्योतिः एव अयं पुरुषः इति अग्निर् एव अस्य ज्योतिर् भवति इति अग्निना एव ज्योतिषास्ते पल्ययते कर्म कुरुते विपल्येति इति एवम् एव एतद् याज्ञवल्क्य

"And when the sun has set and the moon has set, Yājñavalkya, by what light does this man live?" — "Fire becomes his light: by the light of fire he sits, goes out, works and returns." — "Just so, Yājñavalkya."

Both the heavenly lights are out — fire remains: the hearth, the torch, the lamp. Light has come down from the sky into a man's hands: on a moonless night life is kept going by a hand-made flame.
Note the descent: the sun is for all and always; the moon for the nights; fire only where it has been kindled and is fed. The further the great lights go out, the more light one must get for oneself — but fire too can be put out, and Janaka has already drawn breath for the question.
