अथ एनाम् अभिपद्यते अमो अहम् अस्मि सा त्वम् सा त्वम् असि अमो अहम् साम अहम् अस्मि ऋक् त्वम् द्यौः अहम् पृथिवी त्वम् तौ एहि संरभावहै सह रेतः दधावहै पुंसे पुत्राय वित्तये इति

Then he approaches her: "I am ama, you are sā; you are sā, I am ama. I am the sāman, you are the ṛc; I am the sky, you are the earth. Come — let us unite, let us lay the seed together: may we obtain a son, a man!"

The mantra of union is among the most beautiful marriage words of mankind: amo 'ham asmi sā tvam — "I am ama, you are sā": the very syllables of which sāman is composed (sa + ama — 1.3.22): husband and wife confess themselves the two halves of the sacred chant! And further: "I am the sāman, you are the ṛc; I am the sky, you are the earth" — melody and word, vault and soil: the union of the couple repeats all the great couples of the universe.
Intimacy begun with such a confession is already a song: two enter it as notes enter a chant, and a child is asked for as the fruit of a cosmic harmony: "let us lay the seed together — may we obtain a son". The whole science of the section is in this mantra: bodies unite after meanings do, and what the two have called themselves decides who the third will be that comes to them.
