सः यः इमान् त्रीन् लोकान् पूर्णान् प्रतिगृह्णीयात् सः अस्या एतत् प्रथमं पदम् आप्नुयात् अथ यावती इयम् त्रयी विद्या यः तावत् प्रतिगृह्णीयात् सः अस्या एतत् द्वितीयं पदम् आप्नुयात् अथ यावद् इदम् प्राणि यः तावत् प्रतिगृह्णीयात् सः अस्या एतत् तृतीयं पदम् आप्नुयात् अथास्या एतद् एव तुरीयं दर्शतं पदम् परोरजाः यः एषः तपति न एव केन चनाप्यम् कुतः उ एतावत् प्रतिगृह्णीयात्
saḥ yaḥ imān trīn lokān pūrṇān pratigṛhṇīyāt saḥ asyā etat prathamaṃ padam āpnuyāt atha yāvatī iyam trayī vidyā yaḥ tāvat pratigṛhṇīyāt saḥ asyā etat dvitīyaṃ padam āpnuyāt atha yāvad idam prāṇi yaḥ tāvat pratigṛhṇīyāt saḥ asyā etat tṛtīyaṃ padam āpnuyāt athāsyā etad eva turīyaṃ darśataṃ padam parorajāḥ yaḥ eṣaḥ tapati na eva kena canāpyam kutaḥ u etāvat pratigṛhṇīyāt
One who received these three worlds full [of riches] would obtain [only] her first foot; one who received all that is in the threefold knowledge would obtain her second; one who received all that breathes would obtain her third. But her fourth, visible foot above the dust — the one who burns — is unattainable by anyone at all: whence could one receive so much?

The price list of the prayer: three full worlds = the first foot; the whole threefold Veda = the second; everything alive = the third. And the fourth is "unattainable by anyone at all: whence could one receive so much?" (kuta u etāvad dadyāt): there is no equivalent in the universe for the One who burns above the dust — He is outside exchange, outside gifts, outside prices.
So the Upaniṣad teaches the reckoning of holy things: prayer is greater than the worlds, and He on whom the prayer rests is greater than every "greater". The fourth foot cannot be paid for — one can only stand before it; here the economy of merits ends and pure worship begins.
