In the Sabhā-parva the Lord again acts: Kṛṣṇa frees the kings who had languished in Jarāsandha's prison, and He Himself slays Śiśupāla, who had reviled Him beyond measure. Here too lies the root of the coming war: Duryodhana's envy at the sight of the devotees' wealth, and the fateful game of dice. And when Draupadī is cast into distress, it is she "who like a boat rescues those who sink" — yet it is Kṛṣṇa Himself, as the tale itself makes known, who saves her, manifesting an endless cloth. Thus in the very depth of calamity the Lord's protection shines forth: He shields His devotees in the most desperate hour. And the envy and treachery of the Kauravas only hasten their appointed reckoning.
