These tales, heard by the Pāṇḍavas in exile, are a treasury of dharma and devotion. King Śibi, who gave his own flesh to save a dove, revealed the highest compassion and self-sacrifice; Damayantī and Lopāmudrā embody faithfulness; Agastya and Cyavana, the power of austerity. And the life of Rāma-Paraśurāma recalls the Lord's own descent to cleanse the earth of impiety. By hearing such accounts of the righteous and of the Lord's deeds, the Pāṇḍavas grew stronger in dharma — for the company of the saintly and the holy word (sādhu-saṅga and śravaṇa) nourish the soul more than any outward good. Thus the tradition teaches: in trials, take refuge in hearing about the Lord and His devotees.
