The Drona-parva is darkened by the death of young Abhimanyu — Arjuna's son and Krishna's nephew, surrounded and killed by many warriors in violation of the code of honor. This crime lays bare the depth of the Kauravas' adharma and foreshadows their ruin: the trampling of dharma always draws retribution. Arjuna's vengeance on Jayadratha, accomplished before sunset only by Krishna's grace (who veiled the sun), shows that the Lord himself fulfills the vow of his devotee. The death of Drona himself — through the sorrowful half-truth about the death of "Ashvatthaman" — teaches how fine is the line of dharma even for the righteous, and how war corrupts everyone. And the weapon of Narayana released by Ashvatthaman is quelled only by humility: those who bowed before it were saved — a sign that before the Lord's might one must bow, not resist.
