Translation

Next I shall tell of the terrible Sauptika-parva. To wrathful Duryodhana, his thighs broken, after the Pandavas had departed, came three surviving warriors — Kritavarman, Kripa, and the son of Drona (Ashvatthaman) — drenched in blood at the close of day. Then the son of Drona, hardened in fury, vowed not to lay down his armor until he had destroyed all the Panchalas led by Dhrishtadyumna and the Pandavas with their kinsmen. And that night those tigers among men, led by him, slaughtered the sleeping, unsuspecting Panchalas together with their whole retinue. Only the five Pandavas escaped, finding refuge in the power of Krishna, along with the great archer Satyaki; the rest perished. Draupadi, stricken with grief for her slain sons, father, and brothers, resolved upon a fast and sat before her husbands. At Draupadi's word the enraged Bhima, terrible in might, pursued the son of Drona. In fear of Bhima, and driven by fate, the son of Drona in his fury released the weapon 'for the destruction of the Pandavas'; 'Not so!' said Krishna, restraining his intent, and Arjuna with his own weapon neutralized that weapon. [Here too are told] the mutual curses of the son of Drona and Dvaipayana (Vyasa) at the water-offering made to all the fallen kings, and the tale of the secretly born Karna, son of Pritha (Kunti). Such is the tenth, the Sauptika-parva: eighteen chapters and eight hundred seventy verses.
