The Sauptika-parva is the darkest of all: the son of Drona's night slaughter of sleeping warriors is the height of adharma, a crime against every law of honor. And it is telling that the five Pandavas survived only because that night they were away from the camp — 'by refuge in the power of Krishna' (kṛṣṇa-bala-āśrayāt). Here lies a hidden lesson: it is not valor or fortified walls that save, but the shelter of the Lord alone; whom Krishna protects, neither fate nor weapon can overcome. The brahmastra released by Ashvatthaman threatens even the unborn Parikshit in the womb — yet the Lord Himself protects His devotee within the womb, and the lineage continues. The curse that condemned Ashvatthaman to a thousand years of wandering shows the fruit of villainy against the devoted. Thus the parva reveals two paths: the ruin of one who makes war on the saintly, and the deliverance of one who has taken shelter in Krishna.
