atha yat etat akṣṇaḥ śuklam bhāḥ sā eva ṛk atha yat nīlam paraḥkṛṣṇam tat sāma tad etat etasyām ṛci adhyūḍham sāma tasmāt ṛci adhyūḍham sāma gīyate atha yat eva etat akṣṇaḥ śuklam bhāḥ sā eva sā atha yat nīlam paraḥkṛṣṇam tat amaḥ tat sāma
Now the white shining of the eye is the ṛc; and what is blue, beyond-black [in it] is the sāman. This sāman is laid upon this ṛc; therefore the sāman is sung as laid upon the ṛc. The white shining of the eye is "sā", and what is blue, beyond-black is "ama": that makes "sāma".

A mirror of verse 1.6.5 — set in the eye: the human eye too has its śuklam bhāḥ — white shining (the white, the light of the eye) and its nīlaṁ paraḥ-kṛṣṇam — dark depth (the pupil, the black well by which we see!): the white is the support-"sā", the dark the power-"ama": the eye, like the sun, is of two parts, and its darkness is the working part: it is precisely by the black pupil that light comes in.
The eye–sun correspondence is of the greatest antiquity (Aitareya: from the Puruṣa's eye came forth the sun!) — and here it is pressed to optical exactness: both are a white field with a dark centre, both are gates of light with a depth in the middle. And as the Puruṣa was seen in the dark-golden core of the sun, so in the dark core of the eye there will now be revealed… the Same.
