These five are indeed the men of Brahman, the doorkeepers of the heavenly world. For him who knows these five men of Brahman, the doorkeepers of the heavenly world, a hero is born in his family; and he himself attains the heavenly world — he who knows these five men of Brahman, the doorkeepers of the heavenly world.

The warders are named in due form: pañca brahma-puruṣāḥ svargasya lokasya dvāra-pāḥ — "five men of Brahman, doorkeepers of the heavenly world": the five breaths at the heart's five gates are no physiology but the guard of a Kingdom: the heavenly world opens from within, and its doors are in the breast, under the watch of five.
A twofold fruit: asya kule vīro jāyate — "a hero is born in his family" (knowledge of the gate-warders begets warriors of the spirit among one's descendants!) — and he himself pratipadyate svargaṁ lokam — "enters the heavenly world": acquaintance with the guard is the pass: gates open to their own. The dahara-vidyā of the eighth adhyāya will carry this through to the end; here is the first drawing: heaven is not overhead but behind the heart's five doors, and the doorkeepers have long known your face — now know theirs.
