"It is indeed just so, Maghavan," he said. "But I shall explain him to you further — and in no other way than out of this. Live here another five years." And he lived there another five years — a hundred and one years in all. That is why it is said: "A hundred and one years Maghavan lived with Prajāpati in brahmacarya." Then Prajāpati said to him:

The last postponement is mercifully short: five years, and the count closes at a hundred and one. The number is no accident: a hundred and one, like the hundred and one channels of the heart, of which one leads to immortality (8.6.6): a year for a channel, and the last, the hundred and first, is the very one that runs to the crown and the light. Indra's discipleship is itself laid out as a journey along the nāḍīs.
The teacher's qualification is precious: "and in no other way than out of this" (na u eva anyatra etasmāt) — the final truth will not annul what has gone before but will be derived from it: from the body, from dream, from deep sleep, taken as rungs. And the Upaniṣad proudly records the tradition: "a hundred and one years Maghavan lived in brahmacarya" — a verse to be repeated afterwards to everyone in a hurry: if the king of the gods got no discount, who will?
