पुरा तृतीयसवनस्य उपाकरणात् जघनेन आहवनीयस्य उदाङ्मुखः उपविश्य सः आदित्यम् सः वैश्वदेवम् साम अभिगायति

Before the beginning of the third pressing, sitting down behind the āhavanīya fire, facing north, he sings the sāman of the Ādityas and the sāman of the Viśvedevas:

The third door is the evening one, and it is double: behind the āhavanīya (the fire of offering — the eastern, "godward" fire!) two sāmans are sung: the āditya and the vaiśvadeva — to the Ādityas and to the All-gods: the evening hour belongs to two hosts, and each is greeted with a melody of its own.
The day's three fires are now ranged: gārhapatya (the hearth, the Vasus) — āgnīdhrīya (the kindling, the Rudras) — āhavanīya (the offering, the Ādityas and all): from the household hearth, through the fire of labour, to the fire of ascent: the route of a sacrificial day is itself a road from home to heaven. Evening, which holds "all the gods", is the widest hour: before the day closes, the door is flung open to the whole span of the pantheon.
