Into this fire the gods offer King Soma. From this oblation rain is born.

The second oblation: Soma, born of faith on the heavenly altar, is poured into the fire of the thunderstorm — and is transmuted into rain. The chain has begun to descend: the subtle thickens, the heavenly prepares to become earthly. Each step is not a mechanical cause but a sacrifice: the gods "offer" (juhvati), and only out of what is offered is the next thing "born".
It is worth hearing that verb: rain does not "fall" — it is born of an oblation. The world is held together by an unbroken sacrificial exchange, and the Gītā refers directly to this ladder: "from rain comes food, from sacrifice rain" (BG 3.14). A cessation of sacrifice is a drought not metaphorical but literal: where faith runs dry, the sky dries up too.
