He who venerates resolve as Brahman attains the worlds that have been resolved — being firm, the firm; being established, the established; being unshaken, the unshaken — and is free to move as he wishes everywhere that resolve reaches." — "Sir, is there anything greater than resolve?" — "There is something greater than resolve." — "Tell it to me, sir."

The reward of the fourth rung is higher than the earlier ones: not merely freedom but stability — "being firm he attains the firm, being unshaken the unshaken". A man of settled will inherits worlds of the same assay: the law of correspondence works at the level of resolve as well. Where a man is firm in his resolve, the world about him firms up.
And yet — "there is something greater". Behind the will stands what directs and enlightens it; a blind determination is a battering-ram without a helmsman. Nārada, untempted even by unshaken worlds, asks further — and the ladder turns from will to consciousness.
