अत्सि अन्नम् पश्यसि प्रियम् अत्त्य् अन्नम् पश्यति प्रियम् भवति अस्य ब्रह्मवर्चसम् कुले यः एतम् एवम् आत्मानम् वैश्वानरम् उपास्ते संदेहः तु एषः आत्मनः इति ह उवाच संदेहः ते व्यशीर्यत् यत् माम् न अगमिष्यः इति

You eat food and see what is dear; he eats food and sees what is dear, and the lustre of Brahman is in the family of one who venerates this Vaiśvānara-ātman thus. But this is only the trunk of the ātman," he said. "Your trunk would have crumbled had you not come to me."

Space is the saṁdeha, the "put-together body", the Vaiśvānara's trunk: the middle part that joins everything, as the ākāśa is the middle container of the world. And the threat matches the member: it "would have crumbled" (vyaśīryat) — a trunk taken for the whole loses what held it together.
The lesson is in the word itself: saṁ-deha, "put together", reminds us that every breadth of the created world is a composite, and a composite is not held by itself. Space seems simple and eternal, yet it too is a member of a Body that lives by Another. The Vedānta-sūtra opens with an analysis of just such passages: "ākāśa is Brahman" only because behind the ākāśa stands He whose sign it serves as (VS 1.1.22).
