अथ वैश्वदेवम् लोकद्वारम् अपावार्णु पश्येम त्वा वयम् साम्राज्याय हुम् आज्याय इति

Translation
Then the [sāman] of the Viśvedevas: "Door of the world, open! May we see you — for the sake of sole sovereignty. Huṁ!"

The evening song of the door, with the highest measure: sāmrājyāya — "for the sake of sāmrājya", full sole sovereignty: the crown of the ladder of petitions: rājya (kingship) → vairājya (wide dominion) → sāmrājya (sovereignty over all): the day's three doors are three degrees of rule, and the petitioner at the last door asks for the whole.
There is a fine pedagogy of desire in this ladder: the Upaniṣad does not quench aspiration but grows it: from kingship to sole sovereignty, until what is asked matches in scope the Boundless: the Veda has no love of petty requests: ask for everything — of All the gods, in the hour when the day opens its last door.
