"To the unhurt chest I go for refuge — by this one, this one, and this one. To breath I go for refuge — by this one, this one, and this one. To bhūs I go for refuge — by this one, this one, and this one. To bhuvas I go for refuge — by this one, this one, and this one. To svar I go for refuge — by this one, this one, and this one."

A prayer of refuge: a father praying for his son (the continuation of "may I not weep for a son" from 3.15.2!): ariṣṭaṁ kośaṁ prapadye — "to the unhurt chest I go for refuge" (to that unageing coffer of the world!): amunāmunāmunā — "by this one, this one, and this one" — three times, with [the son's name] in the place of each "this one": the child's name is set into the mantra as into a setting!
Five refuges in succession: the chest — breath — bhūs — bhuvas — svar: the father surrounds his son with all the tiers of the world, as with the walls of a fortress: prapadye — "I go for refuge, I surrender" — is the very verb of śaraṇāgati (Gītā 15.4, 18.62: tam eva śaraṇaṁ gaccha!): parental love here prays not for good fortune but for the placing of the child into the Unhurt. The verses that follow will disclose what the speaker has in fact taken refuge in.
