The sage addresses the narrator with warmth and reverence — "lotus-eyed" (kamala-patra-akṣa). In Vedic literature this epithet most often refers to the Lord Vishnu-Krishna Himself, whose eyes are compared to lotus petals; here it expresses respect and affection for the one who is about to bring a sacred narration. The very conversation now beginning ultimately leads to the Lord and His deeds, so already in this address an echo of His name sounds. The sincere wish to hear ("tell this to me who am asking") marks the true listener: knowledge opens itself to one who humbly asks for it.
