Sanjaya deepens the lesson: not merely the mighty but the most virtuous kings have died — those whose deeds, valor, generosity, and piety (astikya), truthfulness, purity, and uprightness are sung in the Puranas. This marks an important turn: not only power and fame are transient, but even worldly virtues and merits — unless crowned by devotion to the Lord, they do not save one from death. Among the virtues listed is astikya, faith in God and scripture; the tradition teaches that this faith, matured into pure devotion (bhakti), carries one beyond birth and death. So the soul's true support is not virtue in itself but rootedness in the Lord, who alone is imperishable.
