Duryodhana, skilled in the mace duel, was felled by a blow below the waist, dealt by Bhima at Krishna's signal. Outwardly this is an 'unfair' stroke -- but behind it stands a higher justice: Duryodhana had long since transgressed every dharma (deceit at dice, the attempt to burn the Pandavas alive, the dishonoring of Draupadi), and so had forfeited any claim to its protection. The Lord, master of dharma, knows best when and how justice must be done; His 'design' (buddhi) fulfills not the letter of the rules but their deepest meaning -- the triumph of righteousness. A devotee who follows Krishna's direction acts blamelessly even where the ordinary eye sees a violation.
