The Pandavas were born to Kunti and Madri from the gods: Yudhishthira from Dharma, Bhima from Vayu, Arjuna from Indra, and Nakula and Sahadeva from the Ashvins. They were born "according to the secret teaching of dharma" (dharma-upanishad) — by a sacred method, through the blessed mantra Kunti had received from Durvasa, and not out of lust. This points to the pure, righteous, and providential origin of the Pandavas: they are no ordinary men, but beings connected to the gods and, above all, devotees of Lord Krishna who appeared for the sake of His design. Birth in dharma rather than in desire is the seal of their special nature.
