The Sauti offers homage to the assembled sages, calling them "brahma-bhuta" — established in spirit. It is important to understand this word correctly. In the Bhagavad-gita (18.54) the Lord says that the state of brahma-bhuta is not impersonal dissolution nor the final goal, but a threshold: one who attains it is free from grief and desire, full of joy, looks equally upon all — and it is then that one attains pure devotion to the Lord (para-bhakti). Therefore, in calling the sages brahma-bhuta, the Sauti glorifies them as pure, spiritually established devotees, not as having merged into an impersonal Brahman. The reading according to which the individual soul loses its personhood is rejected here; to be "established in spirit" means to be purified of material self-identifications and to stand upon the path of loving service to the Supreme.
