The Mahabharata encompasses all the knowledge a human being needs: the genealogies of kings, the structure of the world, hidden teachings, the yoga of the Vedas together with spiritual discernment (vijnana), the three aims of life — dharma, artha, and kama — and every kind of shastra. It is said that Vyasa ‘beheld’ (drishtavan) all of this: not merely composed it with his mind, but grasped it through insight, as an empowered incarnation of the Lord endowed with perfect vision. Yet for all the fullness of this worldly knowledge, the tradition points to a hierarchy of goals: above dharma, artha, and kama stands moksha, liberation, and above liberation itself stands a fifth and higher goal: prema, pure love for the Lord. Thus the encyclopedia of human life contained in the Mahabharata is crowned not by worldly goods, nor even by impersonal liberation, but by devoted service to Hari, for whose sake everything else acquires meaning.
