"When I heard that Madhava Vasudeva (Krishna) had entirely devoted himself, with his whole being, to the cause of the Pandavas — He whose single stride, they say, measured this earth — then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope of victory."

Here Krishna is called Vasudeva, whose "single stride measured this earth" — a reference to Vishnu-Vamana, who spanned the universe in one step. This directly identifies Krishna with the Supreme Lord, whose power is boundless. And this same Lord has taken the side of the Pandavas "with his whole being" (sarvatmana). When the Supreme Himself is wholly devoted to the cause of His devotees, their defeat is unthinkable: the outcome is decided not by the strength of armies but by the Lord's presence. Herein lies the devotee's assurance: God Himself is with him.
