This verse opens the famous refrain: with each feat of the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra loses hope for his sons' victory. The blind king senses it: where the Pandavas, protected by Krishna, prevail, his sons, followers of adharma, cannot stand. This repeated "I lost hope" is an unwitting testimony to the inevitable triumph of dharma resting on Krishna (Gita 18.78). The very form of the refrain drives home a single truth: to oppose the Lord's devotees is hopeless.
