Vyasa first taught the Mahabharata to his son Shukadeva — the great liberated devotee who would later relate the Shrimad-Bhagavatam. Only afterward did he pass it on to other "worthy" (anurupa) disciples. Here a twofold truth stands out: knowledge descends first to the most mature (Shuka, the paramahamsa), and is given only to those who deserve it — for the fruit depends on the disciple's readiness. The mention of Shuka links the Mahabharata and the Bhagavatam into a single stream of hari-katha, flowing through one line of succession.
