The infallible spear of Indra, which Karna had kept in reserve for Arjuna, was by Krishna's design spent upon Ghatotkacha, Bhima's son. The Lord arranged it so that this dreadful weapon, capable of slaying Arjuna, was spent for nothing, and Arjuna was saved. Here is the providential wisdom of the Supreme: even a loss — the death of Ghatotkacha — serves His plan to protect the devotee. The Lord shields the one dear to Him, directing the course of events with an unseen hand.
