पाण्डवानाम् उपहृतां स दृष्ट्वा पर्यतप्यत ॥

Traducción
Having seen such splendid prosperity of the Pandavas, he was filled with a great wrath born of envy. And having seen the assembly hall resembling a celestial chariot, skillfully built by Maya and presented to the Pandavas, he was tormented by envy.

Duryodhana's envy (īrṣyā) at the sight of the Pandavas' wealth and Maya's wondrous palace is the seed of the whole catastrophe to come. Envy of devotees and of the fortune the Lord has granted them is the root of adharma. Shri dwells with the Pandavas, for Lakshmi follows Narayana; the envious man cannot bear the sight of the Lord's mercy poured out upon others. It is precisely matsarya (envy) that renders the heart incapable of devotion — indeed it is said that the Bhagavatam is meant for the "non-envious" (nirmatsarāṇām, SB 1.1.2). Duryodhana embodies the envious soul, consumed at the sight of another's God-given good fortune.
