No one can bypass the path ordained by the Ordainer (Vidhatri); at the root of everything lies time — arising and destruction, joy and sorrow alike. But "time" here is no self-sufficient, impersonal master: in the Bhagavad-gita (10.30) the Lord says, "among reckoners of time, I am time," and in 11.32, "I am time, the destroyer of worlds." Time, then, is the Lord's own energy, an instrument of His will. To acknowledge the rule of time is to acknowledge the rule of the Supreme over all things. The soul that has surrendered to Him is not crushed by the wheel of time, for its refuge is the One who stands above time.
