When I heard, O dear one, of the various hardships of the righteous-souled Pandavas, who had gone forth into the forest and endured suffering out of love for their eldest brother—then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope of victory.

The Pandavas bear all the hardships of exile without complaint—and bear them out of love for their eldest brother Yudhishthira, for the sake of their given word and of dharma. Here is the forbearance (titiksha) of devotees: they accept adversity without murmuring, never straying from the path of righteousness. Love for the elder and readiness to suffer for dharma are the devotee's ornament; it is this very steadfastness that makes them unconquerable in the eyes of the Lord.
