नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम् ।
देवीं सरस्वतीं चैव ततो जयम् उदीरयेत् ॥

This is the opening invocatory verse (mangalacharana). Before telling the epic, the narrator offers homage to Narayana and Nara — the two eternal sage-incarnations — and to Sarasvati, the goddess of speech, so that the narrative may be auspicious and true. The word "Jaya" ("Victory") is the most ancient title of this work, pointing to the victory of dharma and of devotion to God.
