तेषु जातेषु वृद्धेषु गतेषु परमां गतिम् ।
अब्रवीद् भारतं लोके मानुषे ऽस्मिन् महान् ऋषिः ॥

Only after the heroes had lived out their span and passed on ‘to the highest goal’ (parama gati) did Vyasa tell the Bharata — as one who had witnessed their whole path. For devotees of the Lord, the ‘highest goal’ is return to Him: the Pandavas, Krishna's devotees, attained precisely this destination. Vyasa recounts their story ‘in this world of men’ out of compassion — so that others too, hearing of the Lord and His devotees, may follow the same path and reach the same highest goal. In this way the narrative itself becomes for us a boat toward the soul's highest destiny.
