Preserving sacred knowledge requires two kinds of people: those able to interpret it correctly, and those who carefully hold the text in memory. Interpretation without exact preservation degenerates into speculation, and preservation without understanding into a dead letter. Only together do they keep the tradition alive and unaltered. In just this way truth is safeguarded by a community versed in guru-parampara — through both the faithful memory of the word and its authorized explanation, rather than through willful speculation.
