The Mahabharata contains not only itihasas with their explanations but the shruti itself — the Vedic revelation. That is why it is in full accord with the Vedas while also making their meaning accessible. Everything in it is set out coherently, in order. Herein lies its special purpose for our age: what is hidden and hard to reach in the Vedas is given here in a connected, understandable form, so that a person of Kali-yuga can grasp the Vedic truth and, through it, come to the Lord. Thus the ‘fifth Veda’ becomes a bridge from the sacred word to devotion.
