Sanjaya offers comfort: what was destined to happen has happened, and so grief is fruitless — no human discernment can turn back what is foreordained (daiva). But "fate" here is no blind, impersonal force: behind it stands the will of the Lord and the law of karma He has established. Acceptance of the inevitable is not the fatalism of despair but the recognition of a higher will. The wise do not lament what cannot be averted, but surrender themselves to the Lord, the master of all destiny; for what lies beyond human power lies wholly within the power of the Supreme.
