यदाश्रौषं द्रोणपुत्रादिभिस् तैर् ।
हतान् पाञ्चालान् द्रौपदेयांश् च सुप्तान् ।
कृतं बीभत्सम् अयशस्यं च कर्म ।
तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥

अनुवाद
"When I heard that those -- the son of Drona (Ashvatthama) and the others -- had slain the sleeping Panchalas and the sons of Draupadi, and that a ghastly, infamous deed had been done -- then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope of victory."

Ashvatthama and his accomplices slaughter the sleeping by night -- the Panchalas and Draupadi's young sons. This is the very depth of adharma: the killing of the defenseless, the sleeping, those unable to protect themselves. The epic itself calls it 'ghastly and infamous' (bībhatsam ayaśasyam). One who has renounced dharma loses all humanity; evil, meeting no barrier, reaches its limit. And this dark massacre draws down upon Ashvatthama the Lord's curse.
