मृगव्यवायनिधने कृच्छ्रां प्राप स आपदम् ।
जन्मप्रभृति पार्थानां तत्राचारविधिक्रमः ॥

अनुवाद
In the killing of a deer at the moment of mating he brought upon himself a grievous misfortune; and from the birth of the Parthas onward, [there follows] the order of observances and rites.

This verse briefly signals the themes to come. Pandu, having struck down a deer (in truth a sage in a deer's form) in the moment of mating, brings upon himself a heavy curse — a misfortune born of a breach of dharma. Thus the working of the law of karma is shown: a wrong deed inevitably bears its fruit. But right beside it another thing is pointed out — from the birth of the Parthas the "order of observances and customs" (achara) is set forth: the life of the Pandavas is ordered by dharma from its very beginning. In this contrast lies the lesson: fate and righteousness are woven together under the design of the Lord; and one who follows achara rooted in devotion walks the true path even amid misfortune.
