यदाश्रौषं शांतनवे शयाने ।
पानीयार्थे चोदितेनार्जुनेन ।
भूमिं भित्त्वा तर्पितं तत्र भीष्मं ।
तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥

"When I heard that, when the son of Shantanu (Bhishma) lay there and asked for water, Arjuna, piercing the earth with an arrow, gave Bhishma drink there — then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope of victory."

For Bhishma, lying on his bed of arrows, Arjuna, at his request, brings forth water by piercing the earth with an arrow, drawing a pure spring for his grandfather. Even on the battlefield, having felled his opponent, the devotee preserves respect and care for his elder: the dharma of love and reverence does not fade even amid enmity. Thus the nobility of the Pandavas shows itself, whose deeds are always illumined by dharma; and in this shines a reflection of the fact that they are guided by the Lord Himself, in whom all dharma finds its fulfillment.
