तेभ्यश् चान्ये गताः पूर्वं राजानो बलवत्तराः ।
महारथा महात्मानः सर्वैः समुदिता गुणैः ॥

Sanjaya reinforces the teaching: not only those named but even mightier and more excellent kings have passed into the past. If even they, who surpassed all others, did not escape death, it is all the more unfitting to cling to the perishable and grieve over the inevitable. The conclusion for the soul is single: everything temporal is doomed, and therefore refuge should be sought in the imperishable — in the Lord, who alone stands beyond time. Thus Sanjaya leads the grieving king from despair toward sober understanding and the search for the eternal.
