ततो ऽध्यर्धशतं भूयः संक्षेपं कृतवान् ऋषिः ।
अनुक्रमणिम् अध्यायं वृत्तान्तानां सपर्वणाम् ॥

Vyasa also composed a condensed index of a hundred fifty verses — the "anukramani," a table-of-contents chapter for all the events and parvas (books). This very first chapter is that anukramani itself. The orderly division of the work into parvas and the presence of a table of contents testify to a careful, ordered design in the Lord's incarnation of the truth: it is presented not haphazardly but clearly articulated, so that the listener may confidently move through it step by step, from the introduction to the very heart of the narrative about the Supreme.
