यदाश्रौषं शरतल्पे शयानं ।
वृद्धं वीरं सादितं चित्रपुङ्खैः ।
भीष्मं कृत्वा सोमकान् अल्पशेषांस् ।
तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥

अनुवाद
"When I heard that Bhishma — the aged hero, felled by many-feathered arrows, who had reduced the Somakas to a mere handful of survivors — lay on a bed of arrows — then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope of victory."

Bhishma, felled by arrows, rests on a bed of arrows — and even in his fall he is great: he himself chose the hour of his departure. In tradition Bhishma is honored as a great devotee of the Lord: lying on the arrows, he will behold Krishna and offer Him prayers. Thus even a devotee's defeat turns into an elevation — a closeness to the Lord in his final hour. The fall of so great a warrior tells Dhritarashtra, more clearly than anything else, that the time of dharma has come.
