आचख्युः कवयः के चित् संप्रत्य् आचक्षते परे ।
आख्यास्यन्ति तथैवान्ये इतिहासम् इमं भुवि ॥

This history belongs to no single age: it was told in the past, is told now, and will be told in the future. This points to the living, unbroken continuity of hari-kathā — the stream of narration about the Lord that flows from age to age and never runs dry. The Mahabharata is not a monument composed once and for all, but an ever-continuing remembrance of the Supreme. By hearing and retelling it, a person enters this inexhaustible stream of devotees, joining those who preserved this word before him and those who will carry it onward.
