द्यौः एव उत् अन्तरिक्षम् गीः पृथिवी थम् आदित्यः एव उत् वायुः गीः अग्निः थम् सामवेदः एव उत् यजुर्वेदः गीः ऋग्वेदः थम् दुग्धे अस्मै वाक् दोहम् यः वाचः दोहः अन्नवान् अन्नादः भवति यः एतानि एवम् विद्वान् उद्गीथाक्षराणि उपास्ते उत् गी थ इति
dyauḥ eva ut antarikṣam gīḥ pṛthivī tham ādityaḥ eva ut vāyuḥ gīḥ agniḥ tham sāmavedaḥ eva ut yajurvedaḥ gīḥ ṛgvedaḥ tham dugdhe asmai vāk doham yaḥ vācaḥ dohaḥ annavān annādaḥ bhavati yaḥ etāni evam vidvān udgīthākṣarāṇi upāste ut gī tha iti
Heaven is "ud", the mid-region "gī", the earth "tha". The sun is "ud", the wind "gī", fire "tha". The Sāma-veda is "ud", the Yajur-veda "gī", the Ṛg-veda "tha". Speech milks out its milk for him — that milk which speech has; and he becomes possessed of food and an eater of food who, knowing this thus, venerates the syllables of the udgītha: ud-gī-tha.

The three syllables are stretched over three triads of worlds: heaven — mid-region — earth (by height!), sun — wind — fire (their luminaries), Sāma — Yajur — Ṛg (their Vedas): nine thrones for three syllables: a little word holds the three-storeyed universe three times over.
And the fruit is a milky one: dugdhe 'smai vāg doham yo vāco dohaḥ — "speech milks out for him the yield that speech has": the image of speech as a cow giving milk to one who knows her syllables (an image native to the Veda: the cow Vāc of the Ṛg-veda!): a word known down to its syllables begins to feed its master: annavān annādo bhavati — "he becomes possessed of food and an eater of food". A singer who knows the composition of his own chant is never in want: his speech-cow is milked by the worlds.
