Hearing is saṁpad, "attainment, acquisition": by listening everything a man can learn is attained — the Veda comes through the ear, and the tradition itself is called śruti, "what is heard". To one who can listen the desired comes of itself, "both the divine and the human": the heavenly, because revelation sounds; the earthly, because human affairs too are learned by listening.
For the path of bhakti this title is especially dear: śravaṇa, hearing, is the first of the nine forms of devotion (SB 7.5.23), the door through which all the rest come in. Yet hearing too is only one of the powers: a year of deafness, the parable will say, life can endure. Listening is not saving of itself but by reason of Whom one listens to.
