अथ खलु अमुम् आदित्यम् सप्तविधम् सामोपासीत सर्वदा समः तेन साम मां प्रति मां प्रति इति सर्वेण समः तेन साम

Next: one should venerate yonder sun as the sevenfold sāman. It is always the same [sama] — therefore it is "sāma"; [though each man thinks:] "it looks at me, at me" — it is the same toward all; therefore it is "sāma".

The second field of the sevenfold is the sun, and with it a new etymology of "sāman": sarvadā samaḥ — "always the same" — tena sāma — "therefore sāma": sāman from sama, "equal"! The sun is sāma-equality in the sky: máṁ prati máṁ pratīti — "'toward me, toward me' [each man fancies]" — sarveṇa samaḥ — "yet it is equal toward all": everyone feels that the sun shines precisely on him, and it gives no one a preference: total reciprocity with total impartiality.
An image of marvellous depth: equality without indifference: to each the sun is "mine" and to no one exclusively: so it is with grace: every heart feels that the Lord is looking at it alone — and this is true for each at once (Gītā 9.29: samo 'haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu — "I am equal to all beings… but he who loves is in Me"). The luminary of day is a sermon on equal love, rising every morning.
