ते ह संपादयाम् चक्रुः उद्दालकः वै भगवन्तः अयम् आरुणिः संप्रति इमम् आत्मानम् वैश्वानरम् अध्येति तम् हन्त अभ्यागच्छाम इति तम् ह अभ्याजग्मुः

Their council ends not in a dispute but in a decision to go to the man who is "at present studying" (saṁprati adhyeti) the Vaiśvānara — the ātman "of all men" (viśva-nara). Mark the humility of the great: five connoisseurs did not settle the truth by a vote — they went to learn. A question about the ātman is settled not by a debate among equals but by an ascent to one who knows.
The name of the subject has already been spoken: vaiśvānara — the ancient Vedic title of Agni as the fire "belonging to all men", the single life of all hearths. The sought-for ātman is neither a private soul nor an abstract absolute but the All-human One: he who burns in everyone. The Gītā will give this name its plainest interpretation: "Becoming the fire Vaiśvānara, I have entered the bodies of those that breathe and digest the fourfold food" (BG 15.14).
