चक्षुः ह उच्चक्राम तत् संवत्सरम् प्रोष्य पर्येत्य उवाच कथम् अशकत मज् जीवितुम् इति यथा अन्धाः अपश्यन्तः प्राणन्तः प्राणेन वदन्तः वाचा शृण्वन्तः श्रोत्रेण ध्यायन्तः मनसा एवम् इति प्रविवेश ह चक्षुः
cakṣuḥ ha uccakrāma tat saṃvatsaram proṣya paryetya uvāca katham aśakata maj jīvitum iti yathā andhāḥ apaśyantaḥ prāṇantaḥ prāṇena vadantaḥ vācā śṛṇvantaḥ śrotreṇa dhyāyantaḥ manasā evam iti praviveśa ha cakṣuḥ
The eye went out. Having stayed away a year, it came back and asked: "How were you able to live without me?" — "Like the blind: without seeing, but breathing with the breath, speaking with speech, hearing with the ear, thinking with the mind." And the eye entered again.

The second year — without sight. The body's answer runs in the same pattern: "like the blind" — life has narrowed but has not stopped. The "support"-eye, whose title sounded so weighty, proves replaceable: the other powers redistributed the service and kept the house.
The parable moves with a ritual regularity — four departures, four returns — and there is sense in the repetition: pride does not surrender at the first trial. Every power must measure its own absence for itself and return to its place for itself. A humility not undergone in person is not learned from another's report.
