अन्तरिक्षोदरः कोशः भूमिबुध्नः न जीर्यति दिशः हि अस्य स्रक्तयः द्यौः अस्य उत्तरम् बिलम् सः एषः कोशः वसुधानः तस्मिन् विश्वम् इदम् श्रितम्

The chest whose interior is the mid-region, whose bottom is the earth, does not wear out; the quarters of space are its corners, heaven is its upper opening. This chest is a treasury: in it all this rests.

A new contemplation: the world as a chest: antarikṣodaraḥ kośaḥ — "a chest whose belly is the mid-region", bhūmi-budhnaḥ — "whose bottom is the earth", na jīryati — "it does not wear out!"; diśo hy asya sraktayaḥ — "the quarters are its corners", dyaur asyottaraṁ bilam — "heaven is its upper opening": sa eṣa kośo vasu-dhānaḥ — "this chest is a treasury": tasmin viśvam idaṁ śritam — "in it all this rests".
The universe is seen as a precious coffer: an earthen bottom, an airy interior, corners that are the quarters, a heavenly lid — and everything that exists laid inside, like goods in a strong-box. The image bears a double message: the world is a storehouse (everything in it is kept, nothing falls out of the chest of being!) and the world does not wear out (the chest is sturdier than its contents!). The next verse will name its sides — and, most touchingly, its calf.
