उद्यन् हिङ्कारः उदितः प्रस्तावः मध्यंदिनः उद्गीथः अपराह्णः प्रतिहारः अस्तम् यन् निधनम् एतत् बृहत् आदित्ये प्रोतम्

The rising [sun] is the hiṅkāra; the risen, the prastāva; midday, the udgītha; the afternoon, the pratihāra; the setting, the nidhana. This bṛhat is woven into the sun.

The fourth sāman — the bṛhat ("the Great", the second of the two royal melodies, the mate of the rathantara!) — is woven into the sun: the sunrise is the striking-up, the morning the setting-forth, noon the lifting-up, the decline the taking-up, the sunset the cadence: the arc of the day is five beats of the Great sāman (a compressed version of the sevenfold day of 2.9).
The pair of great melodies has covered a pair of elements: the rathantara in fire (earthly light), the bṛhat in the sun (heavenly light): the two chief melodies of the Sāma-veda prove to be the world's two fires. A singer who knows this lives between hearth and sun as between two staves of one score.
